FOCA - FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT

Anti-life legislation and policies are anticipated from the new Administration and in Congress in late January. One of these bills called the “Freedom of Choice Act”, or FOCA, represents the most serious legislative threat to unborn children ever. FOCA itself, or other components of this abortion legislation, would create a “fundamental right” to abortion that government could not limit but would be required to fund and support. These would overturn a broad range of pro-life policies, laws protecting parental involvement in an underage daughter’s abortion decision, laws upholding conscience rights, limits on abortion funding, bans on partial-birth abortions, and so on.

The U.S. Bishops are sponsoring a postcard campaign for January 24-25 in all parishes to bring these dangerous prospective policies and legislation to the attention of our Florida Senators: Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson and to our U.S. Representatives. We should also be aware that some of the pro-life provisions in place currently may be abolished by Executive Order of the President once in office. For more information, see: www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/FOCA or contact the Office of Advocacy and Justice, advocacyjustice@orlandodiocese.org.
