Dreambuilders Housing Project

Construction Mission Application

Teams of volunteers travel monthly to our Sister Diocese to help build homes as part of the Dreambuilders Housing Project. Our Dominican brothers and sisters in faith have lived in stick or wooden-plank houses with dirt floors and tin roofs. Our teams work alongside families who wish to have a home that allows them to live with greater dignity and safety. Participants in our construction mission trips come away from their experience personally renewed and enriched.

Missions provide opportunities to explore, to give and to receive, where persons from different cultures and different church experiences discover the riches of each others' worth, dignity and God-given potential.

Dreambuilders Housing Project

A long-time dream of the Mission Office has been to provide adequate and affordable housing for our brothers and sisters in our Sister Diocese. Volunteers from the Orlando Diocese have traveled to the villages of the Dominican Republic to cut boards, install walls, wire homes and paint. Through this effort they have been rewarded with spiritual development, cross-cultural friendships, and a new sense of perspective. Each volunteer team that travels to the Dominican Republic is a wonderful melting pot of retirees, teens, working moms, construction experts, businessmen and college students. Though Dreambuilders is a project of the Mission Office of the Orlando Diocese, volunteers from all faith backgrounds are welcome.

Providing a Hand-Up, Not a Hand-Out

The Dreambulders Housing Project offers opportunities rather than a hand-out. The program preserves the dignity and independence of our sisters and brothers in poverty. Future homeowners contribute over 1500 hours of sweat equity to earn their interest-free mortgages. In addition, the homeowners are taking on significant tasks of the construction, whether it is laying foundations, framing, wiring or cabinet-making. This training provides job skills as well as a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride in their homes. Our goal is to build 200 new homes within the Sister Diocese.

In the Eye of the Beholder

Constructors and engineers from the United States designed simple 480 square foot homes, about the size of a 2-car garage, with the assistance of Dominicans. The homes have a concrete foundation and metal framing to withstand hurricanes and pests. Each has indoor plumbing and electricity (where available) and costs only $8,000 to build. While these structures seem very humble to U.S. Residents for the new Dominican homeowners they are a dream come true because they replace shacks with dirt floors, no indoor plumbing or electricity, and walls made of scrap material.

Be a Dreambuilder!

Join us on a housing building mission and help a dream come true for Dominican families. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds travel from our Diocese and beyond to work side by side with future homeowners.

Opportunities are available for one-week, two-week or longer mission experiences. There are dates available throughout the year.

Please call the office for current dates for you or your group. There are specific needs for contractors, electricians, plumbers, civil engineers, and translators.

While skilled workers are desired, the talents of all willing volunteers will be put to good use. Be a part of our team as we build relationships, build houses, and build hope for the future.
