New President Named for Central Catholic High School in Melbourne
At the recommendation of the MCC Board of Trustees and approved by the Board of Directors, Bishop Thomas Wenski of the Diocese of Orlando appointed Michael Burke as the President of Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Mr. Burke will assume this new position on July 1.
Mr. Burke has served in the ministry of education for more than 27 years, working in private educational institutions in Alabama, Texas, and Arkansas. Spanning his years of service, Mr. Burke has been involved in all aspects of education, from coach, teacher, principal, president and headmaster. He has successfully directed academic programs and created faith-filled learning and business environments for the educational institutions he led. Our Lady of Lourdes in Melbourne Student Wins Big!
Kylie, an 8th grade student at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Melbourne, was the local VFW Post winner, VFW District 13 winner (regional level) and VFW Department level winner (state level) for the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen writing contest. The 2009-2010 theme was “When is the right time to honor our military heroes?”
Kylie received several checks from the post and $250 from the state ladies auxiliary as well as a $1,500 college scholarship for winning at the state level. The check was presented at a dinner in Lake Buena Vista along with a sweater, desk flag and a beautiful plaque. At the national level, Kylie won a $1,000 Deering Memorial Post 6859, Ladies Auxiliary Portland Maine US Savings Bond.

SIXTH DIOCESAN ELEMENTARY ART SHOW

The Office of Catholic Schools congratulates the winners and participants in the Sixth Diocesan Elementary Art Show which was held on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando.
We were pleased to welcome the student artists and their families to view the juried event which celebrates the fine arts in grades Kindergarten through Eighth. Each of the twenty-four elementary schools participating entered four selected pieces of art. Categories were as follows:
Drawing (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8); Painting (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8); Mixed Media (grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8), Three-Dimensional (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8).
Congratulations to Best of Show winner, Rachel, an eighth grade student at Good Shepherd Catholic School in Orlando.

Orlando Science Center Kinetic Challenge
More than 100 students in 30 teams from six schools in Orange, Seminole, Lake, and Polk counties displayed their movable works of art on Saturday, February 20. Two teams from Good Shepherd Catholic School took Best of Show and Most Scientific Awards

Regional Mathcounts competition at Olympia HS
Last weekend, two local Catholic schools competed at the 2010 Central Florida Chapter MathCounts Competition at Olympia High School. St. James and St. John Vianney have both participated for several years at the annual regional competition. The coaches expressed their satisfaction at leading their teams through the competition year after year.
Resurrection Catholic School, Lakeland, FL
On Friday, September, 25, Resurrection Catholic School held the Induction ceremony for its chapter of the National Junior Art Honor Society. The NJAHS was formed in 1989 by the National Art Education Association for students in Grades 7-9 to promote and inspire young artists. Resurrection is the 631st chapter in the country and this is its second year. Art teacher and chapter sponsor, Katie Senkarik, is in her fifth year of teaching Art at Resurrection and is very excited to be continuing this nationally recognized program with her students. The 13 inductees were 7th Graders Samantha, Chase, and Adriana, and 8th Graders, Diego, Austin, Hannah, Dana, Courtney, Carlin, Courtney, Jeannie, Emily, and Julia. These students will be providing art related service to the school, Parish and Lakeland communities as well as building their own series of work for an exhibit in the Spring.
