Twenty-nine teachers throughout the Diocese of Orlando’s nine counties applied. Applicants answered questions about Catholic identity, technology, student enrichment, teaching philosophy and professional development.

The program’s goals are to

  1. Proclaim the Good News, and translate the Catholic faith into action;
  2. Recognize and honor Catholic school teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching;
  3. Model best practices of 21st century teaching;
  4. Build effective partnerships; and
  5. Focus attention on the positive accomplishments of the Diocese of Orlando’s Catholic school teachers and students.

The Diocese of Orlando employs approximately 1,000 faculty members throughout its 44 Catholic schools.  The Office of Catholic Schools recognizes the importance of identifying its leaders as Catholic schools work to utilize 21st century teaching methods in all classrooms.

The 21st Century Catholic School Teacher of the Year serves as an ambassador of the profession. She conveys, both orally and in writing, in person and through various media, ideas on current issues and challenges that confront the teaching profession and Catholic education. The elementary and high school Catholic teacher of the year will serve as role models and may be asked to explain a specific program, instructional strategy or activity that she has developed; how those efforts benefited students; and how the experiences might help other schools and teachers. The 21st Century Catholic School Teacher of the Year also conducts demonstration lessons and contributes to teacher recruitment efforts.
