EVANGELIZATION RESOURCES
2008 YEAR OF EVANGELIZATION
CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE, a quarterly issue report by Bishop Thomas Wenski of the Diocese of Orlando. This publication looks at urgent current issues from the perspective of Catholic social teaching as a means to find lasting and moral solutions.
In January of 2007, a report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that “the warming of the climate is unequivocal.” The case can be made for serious and urgent action. To do nothing could be dangerous and costly to the flourishing of humankind on this planet.
But it is important that the moral and human dimensions of the challenges of global climate change not be overwhelmed by political, economic or ideological pressures.
Three themes drawn from Catholic Social Teaching can help inform how policymakers and people of goodwill should respond to global climate change.
- A “priority for the poor” must ensure that the needs of the poor and vulnerable around the world are not forgotten. We know too well that they are the ones left behind and who pay the greatest price when disaster, floods or droughts occur.
- Our debate and decisions should reflect “the pursuit of the common good,” rather than the search for economic, political or other narrow advantage. To pass on the gift of God’s creation to future generations without doing irreversible harm is but one aspect of the demands of the common good.
- The “practice of prudence,” which often restrains us from acting in haste, in this case “requires us to act with urgency” lest the problem gets worse and the remedies more costly.
Certainly there are no easy solutions but those who seek good solutions must seek to define and refine what prudence and the pursuit of the common good require. The moral measure of any proposed solution is how it can help mitigate the ways that climate change and its remedies burden the poor and the vulnerable.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF CENTRAL FLORIDA ADDRESSING
THE NEEDS OF POOR & VULNERABLE

EVANGELIZATION RESOURCES
2008 YEAR OF EVANGELIZATION
CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE, a quarterly issues report by Bishop Thomas Wenski of the Diocese of Orlando. This report looks at urgent current issues from the perspective of Catholic social teaching as a means to find lasting and moral solutions.
Each year, according to the CDC, an estimated 19 million people are infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Healthcare cost for treatment ranges as high as 15.5 billion dollars a year and creates serious health risks as well as devastating emotional and spiritual consequences.
The Catholic Church teaches that our bodies, including our sexuality, should be celebrated as gifts from God which help define our meaning in the world and with others. The ability to direct our sexuality toward good and healthy relationships and outcomes are expressed through the virtues that are rooted in chastity and abstinence.
These virtues include:
- Prudence in restraining our tendency to act impulsively and without respect for the dignity of the other person
- Justice in embracing the goodness of our sexuality and the formation of relationships of love
- Temperance in disciplining human desire and behavior in order to love with perfect charity
Chastity is an attitude of respect and reverence for the human body and sexual desire, even in marriage. Abstinence is a voluntary decision to refrain from sex, substance abuse, over- eating, etc.
Consider:
- Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Michael O’Grady states, “Abstinence education programs that help our young people address issues of healthy relationships, self-esteem, decision-making, and effective communications are important to keeping them healthy and safe.”
- Catholic World News on June 19, 2007 reported a 75% drop in HIV after a decade of abstinence promotion in Africa versus a study from the University of California-San Francisco, showing that “groups hearing the ‘safe-sex’ [contraceptive use] message had increased numbers of sexual partners and sexual activity.”
Although Congress recently reinstated funding for abstinence education, at a reduced level, their support is tenuous and future funding may be threatened. While evidence proves that such programs are successful there is more we can do. Become educated and educate our legislators.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES PROGRAM TEACHES KIDS TO THINKSMART!
ThinkSmart is a federally funded abstinence education program offered to schools in Central Florida. Operating under the auspices of Catholic Charities, the program revolves around a five hour presentation for youth called RSVP, which stands for Responsible Social Values Program. The curriculum teaches youth ages 12 to 18 how to make healthy choices to last a lifetime.
To reinforce this message throughout the school year, ThinkSmart organizes after school clubs that focus on fun, interactive ways to teach abstinence.
The definition of abstinence, as it pertains to this program, is voluntarily refraining from at-risk behaviors including discrimination, racism, violence, tobacco, alcohol, drugs and sex before marriage. Abstinence education recognizes that young people can—and will—make intelligent decisions if properly informed.
ThinkSmart is not a sex education class but rather, a character building, critical thinking skill development and relationship education curricula. All ThinkSmart programs are adaptable to a variety of presentation settings such as schools, youth groups and church groups that meet daily or weekly.
Parents are considered the primary educators and sources of guidance for their children. ThinkSmart holds workshops to help parents understand the issues and potential threats facing their children each day and encourages parents to talk to their children about these risks and how to effectively handle them.
