Abortion Comedy??? Obvious Child and Obvious Propaganda
This month a new abortion comedy titled Obvious Child opens in theaters. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it, abortion comedy? Okay, how about a comedy with a story about abortion? July 1, 2014 Re: Religious Freedom after Hobby Lobby
As you know, the Supreme Court yesterday voted 5-to-4 to uphold the religious freedom of family-owned businesses with a religious objection to aspects of the HHS contraceptive mandate. The USCCB’s public response, sent to you yesterday, is also available here: http://www.usccb.org/news/2014/14-116.cfm. Some other items that may be of help:
These last two items deserve some explanation. While RFRA was approved by Congress almost unanimously in 1993 and signed into law by a Democratic president, there is now a campaign to weaken or repeal the federal RFRA and the similar laws enacted in at least 19 states, because such protection for religious freedom is supposedly a threat to “sexual and reproductive rights.” The Supreme Court’s decision, finding that RFRA protects those with religious objections to the contraceptive/abortifacient mandate, will be used by our opponents on these issues to intensify this campaign. But at least the religious community anticipated this strategy and was ready to write to Congress as soon as the decision was issued. At both the federal and state level we will need to be vigilant to preserve the freedoms we now enjoy. So, I guess the time for resting on our laurels is already over! Thank you for all you do to defend our God-given gifts of life and religious freedom.
