Why do nuns have to stay in a convent or abbey?
–Brendon, 7th grade, Holy Redeemer Catholic School, Kissimmee
There are several types of nuns. All stay in convents and abbeys. Some are contemplative which means they pray for the needs of the church and the world. It is a beautiful life. There are also nuns who live in convents but help at local parishes, charities. Diocesan priests stay in a rectory which is a house for the priests of the parish. Religious priests may stay in rectory as well but may also stay in a monastery depending on their community. The nuns and priests stay in places based on their apostolate.
This month’s question was answered by Father Jorge Torres, Director of the Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Orlando.
