Blue Mass – September 28, 2018

In the first reading we hear, “There is an appointed time for everything.” Today is our time to pay tribute, to thank and to pray for all our police, fire, rescue, paramedics, all law enforcement officials – all first responders. It is appropriate as tomorrow is their Feast Day of their Patron Saint Michael the Archangel. As God commissioned the Archangel Michael to restore order whenever pride or hatred has threatened peace and justice; wherever there is injury or violence to bring healing and hope. It is therefore an honor and privilege having all our first responders joining us today as we pray for them and their families. We have students from many of our schools joining us also this afternoon.

Today is our time to thank you and to pray for you.

Today is our time to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in the line of duty.

Today is our time to ask God to bless and protect all of you.

In the Gospel today, we hear Jesus ask his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?”

Today I ask you, the people “who are our” police and law enforcements officers, our firefighters, our paramedics, our first responders.

These are the officers that patrol our streets and neighborhoods to keep us safe. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who keep all our schools and students safe. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who teach us how to be safe in crossing the street and where to play safely. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who teach us the dangers of drugs and other things that could harm us. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who teach parents how to keep their children safe. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who come to our aid in time of trouble or need. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who help the sick and injured. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who come to our rescue when fire or flooding endanger our home. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who come to our rescue when we are injured or seriously sick. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who helped the people of Puerto Rico and North and South Carolina after the hurricanes. Bless them, Lord.

These are the officers who help put out forest fires in our neighborhoods. Bless them, Lord

Everyday these women and men set out to serve and protect us. What a beautiful testimony to the gift of life which God has given us! Let us pray with gratitude for each one of them and their families, and when you see a police officer or firefighter or paramedic, purposely thank them for their attention to the gift of life; the gift of you and me.
