As Catholic Days at the Capitol participants gathered in Tallahassee to meet with lawmakers, the bishops of Florida sat down with Florida Senate President Andy Gardiner to discuss public policies of concern to the Church in Florida. The conversation with President Gardiner focused in part on two Catholic Days priority issues – support for an abortion clinic regulation proposal (SB 1722 by Senator Kelli Stargel) and a legislative remedy for the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision that found Florida’s death penalty unconstitutional. The bishops also expressed appreciation for the Senate’s efforts in recent years to expand health coverage to low-income, uninsured populations and recently passed “unique abilities” legislation championed by the president to provide students with disabilities expanded educational options.
