March 20, 2015

Our mission is to apply the teachings of Jesus Christ for the social, economic, and spiritual development of rural America.

CRL helps rural people shape their futures and lead lives of dignity and piety

by providing spiritual, educational and advocacy assistance.

Prayer in Lent

Almighty God,

grant through the yearly observances of holy Lent,

that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects.

LORD Jesus Christ, You are the true Light enlightening every soul born into this world.

You are the Light of the world, shining

in the darkness of our times.

Help us to live in that Light, to make it our own, and to kindle it in the souls of others, increasing the area of light and lessening the darkness in the world.

Then we, too, working for You shall be light-bearers who will help to spread Your kingdom on earth, and increase the number of those who dwell in heaven, the city of eternal light.

March 22: World Water Day

March 22 is World Water Day, an international observation that asks us to better conserve this precious resource for the good and necessity of all people and living things.

As in years past, Catholic Rural Life welcomes the inspirational words of Most Rev. Michael Pfeifer OMI, bishop emeritus of San Angelo, Texas, who writes a reflection on the sacredness of water.

USDAlogoUSDA Grants for Access to Healthy Foods & Support for Rural Economies

At the National Farmers Union convention earlier this week in Wichita, Kan., USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the release of $96.8 million in grants available for four programs supporting specialty crop producers, local food entrepreneurs, and farm to school efforts:

– Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program

– Farm to School Grant Program

– Specialty Crop Block Grant Program

– Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program

Catholic Rural Life advocated for these programs during our Farm Bill campaign efforts. To learn more about the program, visit the blog of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.

Action Alert: Support for Farm to School Program

A bipartisan team in the House and Senate has introduced the Farm-to-School Act of 2015, a bill that will expand the highly successful USDA Farm-to-School Grant Program.

The bill is a win-win-win for farmers, students, and communities – it increases children’s access to fresh foods, supports family farmers, and helps to build strong local food economies.

Please endorse the Farm to School Act of 2015 as a citizen supporter and show your support for the positive change it can bring to schools and communities nationwide. Catholic Rural Life has already done so as an organization.
