Edgardo “Eddie” Cruz was born in New Jersey and raised in Castaner, Puerto Rico until he turned 14. Cruz said he grew in faith thanks to his mother, the persistence of his father and constant prayers. However, it was Father Angelo Vionne who made the biggest impact in his life by showing him how to be a true servant of God.
When Cruz turned 14, his family relocated to Hartford, CT. In 1991 after graduating from high school, he returned to Puerto Rico, where he attended the Interamerican University. He returned to Connecticut in 1993 and married his high school sweetheart, Mariela. They have two children, Eddie and Mikael.
In 1999, Cruz said he experienced an encounter with God that changed his life forever.
“I attended a retreat called the Cursillo de Cristiandad. In the Cursillo, I had a close encounter with Jesus Himself as the Son of our merciful Father; it was a great life changing experience,” Cruz said.
After living in Hartford for 16 years, the Cruz family relocated to the City of Tampa. In 2003, Cruz attended a retreat called “Juan XXIII” that continued to strengthen his spiritual life. It was during this journey that Cruz first heard God’s voice calling him to serve. Then, in 2005 the Cruz family relocated to the city of Mulberry, where they found the Church of the Resurrection.
Cruz and his wife have been parishioners there since December of 2005 and he has served as a lector, chairperson of the Pastoral Hispana, team captain for ground maintenance, Emmaus (Latino), Knights of Columbus, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and extraordinary minister of the sick.
“We have a passion to serve the needy, and we love to serve our community,” Cruz said. “Throughout this journey we continued to grow spiritually and to be nurtured by the Holy Eucharist, which is the center of our lives.”
