Urge Your U.S. Senators to Reject Cuts in Funding for Refugee Assistance and Resettlement
BACKGROUND: Congress is working on providing full-fiscal year 2011 funding with H.R. 1, the Fiscal Year 2011 Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Resolution. On February 19, the House passed its version of this measure, which contains deep cuts in funding to the Migration and Refugee Assistance (MRA) and Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) accounts. These cuts would have a devastating effect on refugees legally admitted to the United States, victims of torture and trafficking and others fleeing persecution, as well as the communities across the United States that welcome them. In Florida, these cuts would greatly impact programs offered by Catholic Charities offices that assist these vulnerable populations through document processing, job readiness, English language instruction and collaboration with schools.
Now that the House has passed its version of H.R. 1, the next step in the legislative process is consideration of the measure by the full U.S. Senate. The Senate will likely act during the weeks of March 7, 2011 and March 14, 2011.
ACTION: Please send an email message to your U.S. Senators and urge them to oppose the drastic funding cuts to the MRA and ORR accounts passed by the House in H.R. 1.
