Acts of the ApostlesIn the First Reading this Sunday, we sense dynamic power as the earliest disciples proclaim the Gospel throughout the cities of the Mediterranean. During Easter Sundays and Solemnities, we hear these accounts from the Gospel of Luke’s companion text. Recognizing its pride of place in the New Testament canon, we feature the 4 audio CD set, “The Acts of the Apostles” from “Now You Know Media.” Dominican Sister Laurie Brink, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union, engages a variety of topics in 25-minute sessions. In “The Pentecost Experience,” Sister Laurie proclaims Acts Chapter 2 and breaks open the gospel writer’s literary and historical references. My heart was pierced by the connection between Mary’s encounter with the Holy Spirit in the first chapter of Luke and the disciples’ Pentecost experience in Acts. Another revelation was the correlation of the lowly witnesses to our Lord’s birth and the undistinguished pilgrims who witness Pentecost. Sr. Laurie points out that the Holy Spirit directs the community of believers but does not provide a lesson plan. As Catholic Christians, we are invited into intentional relationship with our Risen Lord. A detailed Study Guide accompanies this CD series.
