On Oct. 10, 250 deacons and their wives gathered at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish for the annual Deacon Convocation. The day-long event included a Mass celebrated by Bishop John Noonan, a renewal of commitment to diaconal ministry, a presentation by Father Leo Hodges on the ministry of presence and a presentation by Father David Scotchie on homiletics and how the Word of God must take root in a deacon’s heart to preach effectively.
Bishop Noonan encouraged the deacons to evangelize through their lives and serve God’s people. Gary Tester, executive director of Catholic Charities of Central Florida, spoke about how Catholic Charities is there to help our parishes serve the needs of the poor in their communities.
“It was a wonderful convocation and we were all energized by the bishop’s message. It was also a time for fellowship and spiritual growth,” said Deacon David Gray, director of the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Orlando.
