The Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, will present a Lenten concert on Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m., as part of the Basilica’s 2011-2012 Concert Series.
The Basilica Choir was founded to minister to the many tourists and visitors to the central Florida area, and to provide sacred music at weekend Masses. The eight singers in the choir are all professional musicians in the Orlando area and are under the direction of Dr. William Picher.
Featured on the program will be the “Requiem” by English composer John Rutter. Rutter’s music is very popular, particularly in the United States, where many performances of his works are given in churches and in concert. The “Requiem”, completed in 1985, is a seven movement piece for choir and instrumental ensemble which showcases Rutter’s varied textures and characteristic warm harmonies. In addition to the Rutter Requiem, the Basilica choir will perform other music reflecting the Lenten season, including Gregorian Chant and “Ubi Caritas” by Paul Mealor.
Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults, under 12 are free. Group rates are available in advance by calling 407-239-6600 x317. Tickets are available in advance at the Basilica Gift Shop and will also be available at the door.
