Mass to Avert Storms scheduled for June 1, the First Day of Hurricane Season

Bishop John Noonan invites you to the Diocese of Orlando’s annual Mass to Avert the Storms, June 1, 12:10 at St. James Cathedral. At the start of hurricane season, we turn to God and pray that we will be spared from the ravages of nature this year. We pray for the safety of our nation and of our neighbors near and far.

Tours of a disaster relief communications trailer owned by Catholic Charities of Central will be offered. The high tech trailer provides emergency assistance to people in need during a disaster.  The trailer is dispatched to areas that have been affected by storms or other disasters. Alan Rettig, eastern regional director of Catholic Charities of Central Florida, spent a week with the trailer in Alabama, where tornadoes caused destruction. He will provide tours of the trailer and answer questions about hurricane preparedness and disaster relief. The trailer will be parked next to the St. James Cathedral.

The Catholic Charities communications trailer is one of three self-contained units which are available for emergencies.  A diesel generator supplies power to communications equipment — satellite receivers and transmitters, a router for hardwire and wireless Internet connections and telephone.
