mc TrappistStability, obedience and “conversion of manners” are vows in the Rule of St. Benedict. In the 2008 DVD, “Trappist,” monks of Our Lady of Mepkin Abbey in coastal South Carolina share the realities of these practices in their communal life. I have visited Mepkin for retreats over the last twelve years and I plan to join the monastic community in silence and prayer and wonder for five days next week. In this one-hour documentary, we see the Benedictine Rule of Life alive among our contemporaries and learn about seventeen centuries of monastic tradition from St. Anthony of the Desert to American Trappist, Thomas Merton. Contemplative immersion in silence is highlighted in the DVD. Described by Juilliard-trained pianist, Abbot Francis Kline as the “space between the notes,” silence calms our frenetic nerves and creates the interior space to encounter God.  In a conversation this morning, a friend shared a phrase our dear Lord wrote on her heart: “the invitation of Incarnation.” Thank you for that warm welcome as I enter the silence of Mepkin Abbey.
