mc-maryIntroAmong my cherished Advent observances are the celebrations of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. During a feast-day homily, Archbishop Wenski once reflected: “The Virgin of Guadalupe spoke to Juan Diego in his native tongue. The complexion of her skin, and the clothes she wore, communicated to him and to millions of his countrymen that she was ‘one of them’”. During these Advent and Christmas seasons, may we dedicate ourselves anew to living as Jesus taught us to live. On New Year’s Day we will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. In his 2001 homily for this solemnity, Pope John Paul II prayed: “Help us too, O Mary, always to rethink our lives with a spirit of faith. Help us to safeguard places for silence and contemplation in the frenzy of our daily lives. Orient us constantly to the needs of true peace, a gift of the Nativity of Christ.” Our featured DVD this week: “Mary: An Introduction” is a primer on our Catholic Christian Marian devotion. There are two 16-minute programs for children in the primary grades, and parents and young children can enjoy them together. This DVD also contains two 25-minute programs for junior high and older viewers about Our Lady of Guadalupe. The second program is a Spanish language version entitled: “Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.” As a secular Franciscan, St. Francis’ teachings live in my imagination. He exhorted his sisters and brothers to emulate our Blessed Mother and “carry Christ in our heart and body through a divine love and pure and sincere conscience and give birth to him through a holy activity which must shine as an example before others.” Order “Mary: An Introduction ” from the Media Resource Center by email to mediacenter@orlandodiocese.org or call Dan Hardester or Diane Gallagher@ 407-246-4895 (or 4897) for assistance.
