In this season of Risen Life, we feature the 2011 indie film, “The Way” (Rated PG-13). Hearing the Acts of the Apostles – chronicles of the followers of the Way – these Easter weeks, the movie’s title invites our connection with those earliest disciples. Part buddy road movie and part interior journey, the narrative draws us beyond our comfort zones. Filmed along the road to Compostela de Santiago, the central character, Dr. Tom Avery, becomes an unlikely pilgrim on this ancient Christian route from France to the Spanish resting site of St. James the Apostle. Drawn onto pilgrimage by his son, Daniel, Tom leaves his quiet, insular life and joins the cacophony of multilingual seekers amid mountain vistas and cramped hostels. Along the journey, he deepens relationships with his son, his companions and his inner life. Tom learns the truth of Daniel’s admonition: “You don’t choose a life, you live one.” With the Holy Land and Lourdes, Compostela de Santiago is among the most visited sites by Christian pilgrims. I have longed to walk the Camino and now my desire has reached fever pitch. Let’s get some good shoes and walking sticks and meet in the French Pyrenees next Easter!
