Our dear Lord captures our hearts at unexpected times. You might ask what exactly I expected while watching the Paulist Evangelization Ministries webinar, “Forming Parish Evangelization Teams.” I did expect to become more informed about Catholic evangelization. I didn’t expect Paulist Father Frank DeSiano to implant the Gospel deeper into my heart and radically affirm my joy in Catholic Christian community. But our God of Love is also our God of Surprise. My revelatory moment arrived at the conclusion of the webinar in Fr. Frank’s answer to a question about practical examples of bringing the Good News to the world. Jeanne from Mystic, Connecticut, said that our Christian vocation of bearing the Good News seemed like a “high-level summary statement.” She wanted down-to-earth advice. Fr. Frank answered that “parish life is doing this all the time” by forming our children in discipleship, empowering people to care for the neglected and reconciling persons living in estrangement and anger. It’s the daily living of faith and our involvement in parish life that really count. Living faith in parish community and sharing our lived faith with those who have fallen away, or have never encountered our Risen Lord, are the hallmarks of Catholic evangelization.
