In the rhythms of Catholic life, October has special associations with our Blessed Mother.

mc-The-13th-DayIn the rhythms of Catholic life, October has special associations with our Blessed Mother. Two women named in her honor – my mother, Mary Deirdre and my grandmother, Mary Jane – nurtured my relationship with the Mother of God. As a secular Franciscan, I honor Mary as the patroness of the Franciscan religious family. St Francis understood discipleship as a call to consider ourselves as mothers of Christ. “We are mothers when we carry Him in our heart and body…and give birth to Him through a holy activity…”  I feel a special connectedness to our Blessed Mother through my granddaughter, Tory. She was born on the Solemnity of the Assumption two years ago. In honor of our Blessed Mother, we feature “The 13th Day.” This 90 minute film tells the story of Our Lady of Fatima. Mary chose three children to offer her message of hope. Based on the memoirs of Sister Lucia Santos, this DVD dramatizes the story of these shepherd children in Portugal. They experienced six appearances by a “Lady from Heaven” between May and October 1917. Mary gave a secret to the children in three parts that included prophetic warnings. Writer-directors Ian and Dominic Higgins offer stunning images of the visions and the final miracle. Stylistically compelling and technically innovative, this film was shot on location in Portugal and England. Order “The 13th Day” by email @ or call Diane Gallagher or Dan Hardester @ 407-246-4897 (or 4895). Our diocesan Marian Congress, on October 12th and 13th, provides an opportunity to celebrate Mary in the Year of Faith. Please visit for registration information. Among the topics, keynote speaker, Jesuit Father Claudio Burgaleta will address the third secret of Fatima.
