Bonds of love are expressed in the depths of a gaze. From the opening of his eyes as a newborn until his dying entreaty about her well-being, Jesus lived the profound love of a son for his mother. In the Catholic Christian tradition, Mary perfectly reflects our Lord’s light and love. In celebration of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord on March 25th, we offer: “Mary, Mother of Jesus.” This 1999 TV movie runs 90 minutes and features Christian Bale as Jesus and Geraldine Chaplin as Elizabeth. In the title role, Pernilla August models a quiet steadfastness born of faith. The movie tracks the gospel story and offers additional scenes consistent with the Christian imagination. An opening disclaimer cites the inclusion of extra-biblical material; but, the producers, including Eunice Kennedy Shriver, keep their pledge and tell Mary’s story within the context of New Testament teaching. We see gospel events from Mary’s loving and believing perspective as our dear Lord’s first disciple. Christopher Routh’s portrayal of John the Baptist was especially striking and opened an unexpected vista into the gospel. We wish a most blessed day to Msgr. Caverly and our sisters and brothers in the Annunciation parish community!
