Media Center Pick of the Week

In honor of the October 15th Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, we feature the miniseries, “St. Teresa of Avila.” You might think St. Teresa’s mysticism and devotion to spiritual writing couldn’t make compelling television; but each episode of this 71/2 hour Television Espanola production left me in delightful anticipation. Filmed on location in Spain, the acclaimed actress, Concha Velasco, plays the saint with burning intensity. The story lines feature Spanish nobles and church hierarchy as the saint moves heaven and earth to reform the Carmelite order. In the hands of the medievalist, Victor Garcia and novelist, Carmen Maite Gaite, the script has historical and dramatic weight. I relished the scenes in which St. Teresa enlists the aid of St. John of the Cross in her reform efforts. In Spanish with English subtitles, Ignatius Press began distribution of this three DVD set in 2008.
