Media Center Pick of the Week: Come Labor With Us

The Jesuits have faithfully served our Church for 450 years. Jesuit spirituality mirrors the founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius encouraged the faithful to find God in everyone and everything. On a journey to Rome, St. Ignatius had a profound experience in which he encountered Jesus carrying his cross and heard the Father say to Jesus, “Take this man to labor with you.” Jesus turned to Ignatius and said, “Come labor with us.”

The Jesuits have faithfully served our Church for 450 years. Jesuit spirituality mirrors the founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius encouraged the faithful to find God in everyone and everything. On a journey to Rome, St. Ignatius had a profound experience in which he encountered Jesus carrying his cross and heard the Father say to Jesus, “Take this man to labor with you.” Jesus turned to Ignatius and said, “Come labor with us.” In this spirit of profound Christian engagement with the world, the 17th century Jesuit, Peter Claver, ministered to African slaves in South America. In honor of his September 9th feast day, we feature Jesuit spirituality in “Ignatius Loyola: The Story of the Pilgrim.” Insightfully written and lovingly portrayed by Jesuit Father I. Michael Ballafiore, this one-actor film serves as a primer on the foundations of Ignatian spirituality.  From soldier for the Spanish crown to soldier for Christ, from court nobleman to humble priest, from thrill-seeker to educator, Ignatius’ story resounds with transformations. Presented in three 30 minute segments, “In Search of Glory,” “Jerusalem” and “To Cast Fire on the Earth,” this video offers a treasure trove of vignettes. Appropriate for junior high, high school, and adults, this title is particularly suited to men’s discussion groups. An accompanying Study Guide offers discussion questions and reflections. The first Annual Gospel Mass, celebrating the Memorial of St. Peter Claver will be held on September 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the historic chapel of All Souls Catholic Church, 800 South Oak Avenue in Sanford.
