In Hamlet, Shakespeare observes: “What a piece of work is a man…how infinite in faculties…” One can only imagine the bard’s poetic heights had he viewed National Geographic’s 2006 DVD: “The Biology of Prenatal Development.” Blending imagery from six visual technologies, we watch human growth from a single cell at conception to the somersaulting 8 week old and the hand-grasping 35 week old. We can be moved to tears at 26 weeks and prefer licorice only if we shared it with our mothers before birth. This 42 minute DVD has 46 chapters. The viewer can select “The Heart in Action,” “Brain Growth” or “Rolling Over” and watch captivating video accompanied by informative narration and reflective Celtic music. After my viewing, I remain at a loss for words. Fortunately, William Blake has just the right ones: “What is now proved was once only imagined.” Download the PDF text of the program on your PC and select English, Spanish or French versions. DVD narration features Spanish or French subtitles.
