mc InspiredAwakeningIn our continuing review of the series, “Faithful Revolution: Vatican II, we feature the second one-hour title: “Inspired Awakening.” In his final days, John XXIII assured his confidants: “My bags are packed.” Prepared for eternal life, Good Pope John attended to papal transition in his clear support of his first named cardinal, Archbishop of Milan Giovanni Montini. As Paul VI, Montini quickly announced the council’s continuation. Nicknamed “Hamlet,” Paul VI weighed each issue with penetrating intellect. With his leadership, Council Fathers crafted balanced language and secured overwhelming approval for each document. While the initial film, “Genius of the Heart,” highlighted the council’s liturgical reforms, this title focuses on the role of women and the Church’s embrace of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Sister Mary Luke Tobin, the council’s lone American Women Religious representative, Cardinal Willebrands of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and American Protestant theologian Robert McAfee Brown tell their stories with the urgency of historic breakthrough. We hear the informed story of the council’s single schismatic legacy, the Society of St. Pius X. Artist Frederick Franck sketched portraits of the “drama and its main actors” and hailed the Council for “making us creatures see our unity and the divine spark that is the basis of our humanness.” Participate in Vatican II’s call to interreligious dialogue and attend the Interfaith Council of Central Florida’s “Religion 101 Series” and/or their screening of the movie, “Rise and Dream” .
