Mother-TeresaMy dear mother, Mary Deirdre, treasures a relic from the Missionaries of Charity in India. My mom often petitioned Mother Teresa and her community for intercessory prayer on behalf of her sons and grandchildren. In a special way, this saintly woman is a family friend! She even shares the August 26th birthday of my eldest brother, Crofton! In honor of her birthday, we feature the 2006 movie, “Mother Teresa.” After watching and reflecting on this 2-hour biopic, the word “uncompromising” summed up my impressions. From the initial promptings of the Holy Spirit that called her outside the convent walls and into the desperate poverty of Calcutta’s streets, through her perseverance in establishing a new religious order and her constancy in the face of opposition, Mother Teresa calmly exhibited an uncompromising resolve. To the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, she added a fourth for the Missionaries of Charity: “to give hope to those who have lost it and to recognize the face of the Lord in those who suffer.” In the 3rd century BCE, Archimedes of Syracuse reasoned that he could lift the world with a fulcrum if he could find the right place to stand. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta stood on the holy ground of the Gospel and lifted our world with uncompromising service. May we stand in her company and offer our small service with great love!
