In the rhythms of Catholic devotional life, the month of May has special associations with our Blessed Mother. “O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today! Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.” San Pedro Center offers a series of Marian reflections on Tuesdays this month. During Fr. Vianney Cunningham’s “Mary, Mother of Hope,” we explored Pope Benedict’s 2007 encyclical, “In Hope We Are Saved” (Spe Salvi) and meditated on the image of Mary and the child Jesus popularized by the Congregation of the Passion. In honor of our Blessed Mother, we feature “The 13th Day.” This 90 minute film tells the story of Our Lady of Fatima. In a world torn by persecution, Mary chose three children to offer the message of hope. Based on the memoirs of Sister Lucia Santos and eye-witness accounts, this DVD dramatizes the story of these shepherd children in Portugal. They experienced six appearances by a “Lady from Heaven” between May and October 1917. Mary gave a secret to the children in three parts that ranged from harrowing visions of hell to prophetic warnings of World War II, communism, and the attempted assassination of the Pope. Writer-directors Ian and Dominic Higgins create stunning images of the visions and the final miracle. Stylistically compelling and technically innovative, this film was shot on location in Portugal and England.
