Summertime is movie time! Along with the usual blockbusters, we suggest the black and white western. “The Staircase.” This 1998 DVD has all the classic elements of the genre:  picturesque landscapes, struggling pioneers, displaced indigenous people, the stranger without a past, conniving entrepreneurs and conflicted lawmen. But this particular horse opera dramatizes the miracle story of the Sisters of Loretto in 1870 Santa Fe, New Mexico.  The sisters commissioned a chapel; but inexplicably, the architect and contractor overlooked construction of a staircase to the choir loft. Enter the mysterious stranger and real life miracles of reconciliation, redemption and salvation unfold. Due to some thematic elements, we recommend this title for high school and adult viewers.
