Media Center Pick of the Week: The Calling

Poetically expressing the Christian sense of vocation, theologian Frederick Buechner wrote: “Neither the hairshirt nor the soft berth will do. The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” In honor of National Vocations Awareness Week, we offer: “The Calling.” This documentary follows the apostolic life of the small Catholic order, Family of Jesus Healer. Originating in Tampa, the order serves in El Vallecito, Peru.

We enter the lives of Father Philip Scott, the founder, Mother Mary Elizabeth, the order’s matriarch and Orlando Castillo, a young man in discernment of priestly vocation. Watching this DVD, I felt the disorienting sense of leaving familiar comfort zones of family, nation and culture. Reminiscent of my first complete three-hour reading of Mark’s gospel, it’s a breathless sprint to the cross! The story lines pull the viewer into wrenching struggles to discern God’s will. Rather than a feel-good pastoral, “The Calling” plunges its audience into deep gladness and deep hunger. This 2009 DVD includes a 77 minute ‘director’s cut,’ a 3-chapter 60 minute version, bonus features, Spanish subtitles and a study guide with reflection questions.
