At the heart of the tender teachings of our faith tradition, we find the communion of saints. These dear ones accompany us in struggle and joy. This week, we offer the 6 minute DVD bio of the 17th century Native American woman, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. This feature is part of the holy women portrayed in “Saints’ Gallery Volume V.” Next Wednesday, July 14th is the feast day of this Lily of the Mohawks whom Pope John Paul II beatified in 1980. Orphaned, disfigured and partially blinded at age four after smallpox swept through her village in present day Upstate New York, this little girl held fast to the Catholic Christian faith witnessed by her mother. Resisting the disapproval of her uncle and the taunts of extended family, she eventually found Christian community in a Jesuit mission. Mixing flute music with narration, photography and live action amid her native woodlands, this short feature engages the heart and spirit. Dying at age 23, Bl. Kateri is a patroness of ecology and peace.
