A Mass in honor of the patroness of Cuba, Our Lady of Charity, will be celebrated by Bishop John Noonan on September 9 at St. James Cathedral at 7:00 p.m. All our welcome. Known in Spanish as the Misa Caridad del Cobre, this celebration is an opportunity to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and to ask the Blessed Mother to “pray for us.”
In 1608, two brothers and a slave on a mission to find salt for preservation of meat were in a boat that was rocked violently with waves during a storm. The men prayed for her protection and the skies soon cleared. Shortly after, the men came across a statute in the water. The statue was fastened to a board with the inscription “Yo Soy la Virgen de la Caridad”; in English, “I am the Virgin of Charity.”
Misa Caridad del Cobre is usually celebrated Sept. 8, but was changed this year to accommodate Bishop Noonan’s schedule.
