The first observance of what was to become Memorial Day was on May 30, 1868 and grew out of the desire to honor the dead from the Civil War. Today, Memorial Day is the official day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.
Let us pray: God of the living and of the dead, please look with mercy on our brave and selfless brothers and sister, who paid the ultimate price in defending and protecting our nation for the sake of liberty. Eternal rest grant to them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.
