Bishop John Noonan celebrated Mass on April 15 with a number of men who have felt the calling to become deacons in the Diocese of Orlando.
The Mass, held at San Pedro Retreat Center in Winter Park, included the Installation to the Ministry of Reader, which calls for those in the diaconate formation process to go forth and be faithful in handing on the word of God. The reader is responsible for the reading of the Scriptures (except for the Gospel) during liturgical assembly. The reader may also direct the singing and present the general intercessions when a deacon or cantor is absent. The reader may also prepare another member of the faithful to read the Scriptures on a temporary basis.
During the Mass and following the Liturgy of the Word, Bishop Noonan called each of the eight candidates individually. He invited the candidates and their friends and family to prayer, then gave each candidate a Bible. He said, “Take this book of Holy Scripture and be faithful in handing on the word of God, so that it may grow strong in the hearts of his people.”
The candidates are Charlie Cimmino, Jorge Garcia, Ruthven Jackie, Steve Johnson, Greg Nelsen, , Kevin Nguyen, Bill O’Brien and Spencer Silvers. Their ordination would take place in 2013.
