stMaryMagdalen300St. Mary Magdalen, Apostle of the Apostles The universal church honors St. Mary Magdalen on July 22nd. We pray for members of Saint Mary Magdalen parish in Altamonte Springs as we commemorate the life of St. Mary Magdalen.  In celebration, we feature the audio CD series, “30 Remarkable Saints” by the theologian, Father John Jay Hughes. His teaching brings the listener into the company of this steadfast friend of Jesus. Upon our dear Lord’s arrest in the garden of Gethsemane, Mark the Evangelist starkly observes: “All of them deserted him and fled” (14:50). Yes, “all of them,” except the women, and foremost among the women, Mary of Magdala. Fr. Hughes hails her as: “The First Apostle.” St. Mary Magdalen has been confusingly identified for centuries. Dating from Pope St. Gregory the Great’s misidentification of her as Martha and Lazarus’ sister and as the woman who bathed Jesus’ feet with tears, contradictory legends have swirled around the saint. The literature of the immediate post-biblical period, however, portrays St. Mary Magdalen as a preeminent figure in the early church. As the only woman mentioned by name in each of the four gospels, we are sure of her courageous discipleship. In her witness at Jesus’ death, burial and rising, Fr. Hughes likens her to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Both women share an affirmation of life, love of community and striking authenticity.
