St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge was named “School of the Month” in a national magazine, Today’s Catholic Teacher. The school was recognized for their efforts to create an environment of love, empathy and understanding.
Teaching students about the harmful consequences of labeling people as “retarded” was the impetus behind a program called: “Stop the Negative ‘R’ Word; Spread Positive ‘R’ Words.”
The program launched in Spring 2011 during the Lenten season. During this time, the entire school focused on a different skill each week to help students understand that the Gospel of Jesus calls us to be kind in our words and action.
