St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach announces the appointment of Father David Toups, of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, as its new rector. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will make an official announcement to seminarians during Mass at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24.

Father Toups is originally from Seattle and was ordained a priest in June 1997 by Bishop Robert Lynch of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. He currently serves as pastor of Christ the King Church in Tampa and has also served as director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat of Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. Father Toups has degrees from Pontifical North American College, Pontifical Gregorian University and St. John Vianney College Seminary. Father Toups has also served as professor of Theology and Dean of Students as St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary.

“As the 11th rector of the St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary I have seen many men enter the priesthood with faith, love of Our Lord, a pastoral commitment, and the desire to preach the Good News,” said Father Keith Brennan, outgoing rector of the seminary.  “The memories of my years here will never fade and I am grateful for the confidence the board of trustees placed in me.”

“On behalf of all the Bishops of Florida I want to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude for Msgr. Brennan’s tenure as rector of Florida’s regional seminary,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski of the Archdiocese of Miami and Chancellor of the Seminary. “He has served the Church of Florida and these young men very well. And, we welcome Fr. Toups back to St. Vincent de Paul where he is an alumnus and a former faculty member. He returns now enriched by his service to the Bishops of the United States as staff to the USCCB’s committee on priestly life and his most recent service in his home Diocese of St. Petersburg as a very effective and popular pastor. We thank Bishop Lynch in thinking of the entire Church of Florida in releasing him to serve as the new rector of this excellent seminary. We look forward to Father Toups’ sharing his many gifts with the future priests of our State.”

St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary’s mission is to provide a human, spiritual, academic, and pastoral program to prepare candidates for the Roman Catholic Priesthood. The seminary was found in 1963 and is operated by the seven dioceses of Florida, uniting the dioceses in the formation of their priests.
