This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago, the first and only Syro Malabar eparchy in the U.S. With around five million members worldwide, it is the largest Eastern Catholic Church. (LUCAS BLACKWELL | FC)

Salesian Father Nicholas Thalakkottur, vicar of St. Mary’s Syro Malabar Catholic Church in Sanford, carries the Sliba for the faithful to venerate during Raza Holy Qurbana Sept. 12, 2026.

Raza is the most solemn form of the Holy Qurbana in the Syro Malabar Church. From Sept. 4-13, the parish celebrated the 10th jubilee of their church’s consecration with Holy Qurbana offered each day, alongside a novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Masses were celebrated by Bishop George Rajendran Kuttinador, SDB, of Thuckala, India, Bishop John Noonan, priests of the diocese, and former vicars of the parish.
